Prevalence of typhoid fever among patients attending Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital Kano

Typhoid fever poses a serious public health problem in Nigeria and is largely diagnosed based on the Widal agglutination test which has been proven to be neither sensitive nor specific. This study determined prevalence of typhoid using both blood culture automated microbiology systems (BD BACTEC). The was carried out among 90 patients attending Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital Kano. Out cases recruited for study, none (0, 0.0%) had S. Typhi isolated culture. However, 18 (20%) other bacteria are not while 72 (80%) were negative. For test, 63 (70%) positive anti O antigen 27 (30%) Similarly, 42 (46.7%) H antigen, 48 (53.3%) Type toilet system found significantly associated with non bacteraemia (P=0.021). studyrecommends use diagnostic such as molecular techniques determine sensitivity specificity cultural methods.
